You should stick to one text with one method

2021年8月30日

G'day, how are you going mate? Today, I'd like to talk about why you should stick to one text with one method for your English learning. The reason being, I mean, people who aren't improving English skills are prone to buy new textbooks and try to take couple of different methods at the same time. I understand many of you guys want to attempt various learning methods, and decide which one I should take. But, it's gonna be, unfortunately, confusing. Let's get underway.

First of all, too many choices are likely to affect your brain and thinking quite badly. The less choice you have the faster you'll be able to make up your mind, and the better choice you're gonna take. So, you wanna try to eliminate the choices, and stick to the one it might be the most appropriate in terms of English learning. In fact, textbooks out there are mostly synonymous with each other when it comes to contents. The difference can basically be seen from, for instance, example sentences, illustrations, authors' viewpoints, etc. Otherwise, there is nothing to do with the range of contents themselves even if you pick up any different textbook. Particularly, when it comes to English grammar texts, you should grab one text that is easy to read encompassing the use of less esoteric grammar terminologies. I highly recommend purchasing "Grammar in Use Intermediate" for your reference. Even "GIU", the majority of the pages are redundant, which means that you don't really need to peruse, but you just need to flick through the first page of each chapter, and then go for reading them aloud. I presume it's quit simple to learn English grammar.

Next, what do I mean by one method is this: when it comes to LRWS (4 components of English skills), you've just got to have one method to nail your desired level of English proficiency. I mean, as for Listening, for instance, you can stick to one method or "repeating". Personally, repeating sentences is one of the best methodologies in order to develop listening skills. Repeating is, I reckon, not just for reinforcing listening skills, but also for writing as well, as it requires you to understand the overall meaning of what someone said, and reproduce/reconstruct the sentence. As you get used to this method, your pronunciation and oral fluency are also gonna be much better.

All in all, the less choice in terms of learning textbooks and methods you have on your plate, the faster you will learn English, and the more effective and efficient your English learning will be. If you're not quite sure which text and method I should be taking, then please don't hesitate to leave your comments or messages here. I'm willing to answer your queries promptly.

Thanks mate. Cheers.
