G'day, how're ya going mate? Today, I'm gonna be touching on how you could improve reading skills. Well, the short answer is improving your English grammar first. Without gaining a good understanding of it, it's not technically possible to improve reading skills. Let me give you some advice.
First, you've got to make sure you fully understand how grammar functions. You don't have to be perfect in grammar, but nevertheless you've got to have a certain level of grammar knowledge. At least, you've got to make sure that you're fully capable of finding where the subject and verb are within simple, compound, complex as well as compound-complex sentences. You've got to be proficient in finding S and V pretty much instantly no matter how complex sentences you are reading. This is the most important aspect of how you could've improved in reading. To this end, of course, you're gonna make sure you thoroughly study English grammar, steadfastly use all pattern of English grammar for your internal monologue and read aloud practice.
Second, when it comes to the way in which reading skills can be improved, you shouldn't subvocalise sentences all the time. What does it mean? Well, if your pronunciation is pretty accurate, then you can definitely read them aloud with ease, right? But, for those who are not good at reading they are prone to be bad at pronouncing words. So, I do believe that your reading skills are proportionate to the accuracy of your pronunciation, which is one of the important things that you've got to reconcile the gap between them. I've almost never seen English learners who are adept at pronunciation but not at reading. Believe it or not, if you are ready to put in more time and effort to refine English pronunciation, then, I reckon, you're gonna be alright. At least, I don't think you won't be able to read them aloud. But it definitely depends upon your grammar knowledge. But to the best of my knowledge, I'm sure you will be able to enjoy reading and have a better understanding of the contents you're reading. Trust me.
Overall, how to improve reading skills or comprehension? Well, two things you have to keep in mind. One is improving English grammar. Another is refining English pronunciation. If you have mastered both, then I don't think you're gonna be struggling to understand English sentences. Keep it up mate!
